Everything you need to know about the Transfer Portal
What’s going on with the transfer portal
One of the biggest disruptors in college sports today is the transfer portal. The transfer portal was created as an easy way for college athletes to transfer to another school if they decided to do so. It has quickly become a source of chaos.
What is the Transfer Portal
The transfer portal is an online database that collegiate athletes are allowed to enter when looking to change schools
The portal facilitates the transfer process for all parties involved including players, athletic programs, and NCAA administrators
Here is why it was created
The Division I council needed a better way to adhere to student-athletes that wanted to get away from their letters of intent
There are numerous reasons for student-athletes to transfer programs, such as issues with playing time, injuries, scholarship opportunities, or the desire for a new start.
In 2021 alone, over 9,500 student-athletes transferred programs through the transfer portal.
What has changed
Now student-athletes do not need their coach’s approval to enter the transfer portal
An eligible student-athlete can transfer as many times as they like as long as they are eligible
In most cases, due to Covid, student-athletes do not have to sit out a year before they can play
In some cases, a student-athlete may need an exemption to play immediately
Assess the risk
A little under 70% of the student-athletes that enter the transfer portal will land at a new school, which means there is a little bit of a risk when deciding if you are going to transfer.
Many coaches do not like when a student-athlete enters the portal. If you enter the portal and do not land anywhere, you will most likely be unable to return to your original school.
How does transferring impact a student-athlete’s NIL potential?
NIL laws are determined by the state, so a student-athlete’s earning potential is actually based on where their university is located.
Whether a student-athlete never enters the transfer portal or they enter three separate times, their NIL eligibility is still dependent on the state.
Since the NIL came into effect, trends have shown more players tending to transfer to schools with fewer state restrictions on NIL policies.
